Summer is full of sports clinics and camps for kids. There’s another one next week, but it’s a little different than most. It’s free, and aimed at introducing youth to a sport they might not otherwise play.
While many sports camps hover around the $100 mark, making them unaffordable for some families, Pensacola Sports is offering its 2016 Kickstart Soccer Camp free.
“It’s an opportunity for underprivileged kids to get out there and learn soccer,” said Event Manager Mike Price, who will be running the camp.
Youth soccer typically comes with a collection of associated costs: shoes, ball, etc. Instead, Pensacola Sports — formerly known as the Pensacola Sports Association — will be giving camp participants some gear for free, including a soccer ball and a pair of shin guards.
“It’s geared towards the kids that have never played before, maybe just starting out,” Price said.
The Kickstart camp is in its second year. Participants will be taught general skills and will be instructed by players involved in the local Gulf Coast Texan soccer club.
The camp runs from August 2 to 4 at the Brent Football field. Ages 4 to 8 will be instructed earlier in the day, from 8:30 to 10:15 a.m., while ages 9 to 12 will run from 10:15 a.m. to noon.
Participants can register for this free program by contacting Pensacola Sports at 850.434.2800, or online at pensacolasports.org.
